Red Deer MP Earl Dreeshen is in Costa Rica this week to participate in the 10th Plenary Assembly of the ParlAmericas, a network of national legislatures from the Americas.

A release from Dreeshen’s office said legislators from the 35 participating member countries will discuss issues of economic development, natural resource development, and food security during the Aug. 22 to 24 gathering in the Costa Rican capital of San Jose.

Speaking from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston between flights, Dreeshen said women’s rights in the poorer countries of Central and South America and the Caribbean will be tied into the discussions on food security.

“We put a lot of effort into helping women in being able to set up their own businesses and being able to recognize a greater role primarily in food security issues,” said the Conservative.

Discussions will also be held around issues of security and the fight against drugs, with Dreeshen saying legislators will talk about some of the recent legislative activity and new alternatives being tried in some of the member states.

Uruguay has recently moved to become the first country in the world to legalize the possession and sale of marijuana.

Dreeshen also said the annual gatherings have furthered Canada’s relationships with Latin American nations and helped forge the seven free-trade agreements Canada now holds with nations in the Americas.

“We have brought into force more free-trade agreements with Latin America than with the rest of the world combined,” he said.

Dreeshen is heading the delegation of four MPs and one senator from Canada.
