A driver accused of speeding down Highway 2 at speeds over 160 km/h before crashing is facing numerous charges.

Innisfail RCMP said they started getting calls about a highway speeder around 10:15 a.m. on Sept. 11.

“A few minutes after the last sighting, the suspect vehicle lost control attempting to pass a vehicle on the shoulder and crashed near Highway 42,” said RCMP in a Wednesday news release.

Blackfalds RCMP were quickly on the scene and found the driver and only occupant of the vehicle. He was taken to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the vehicle has been charged with multiple traffic offences and had his licence suspended under the province’s Immediate Roadside Sanctions legislation for alleged impaired driving. The investigation continues.

RCMP thanked motorists who reported the dangerous driver and who stopped and assisted following the collision.
