Soaring over Red Deer’s downtown this week, this bald eagle was spotted as it circled above Barrett Park catching thermals rising off the spruce trees in the area. During the winter months bald eagles frequent open water, such as at power generating stations and major rivers in urban environments kept open by warm water from sewage treatment plants. Fish make up the bulk of the bald eagle’s diet but it will also feed on carrion and sick or injured waterfowl.
