Eco-friendly living will be showcased this weekend in Red Deer.

There will be nearly 20 workshops about different sustainability practices and about 30 exhibitors at the seventh annual EcoLiving Fair at Red Deer College Saturday.

“This will be the biggest EcoLiving Fair to date just based on the number of exhibitors and presenters we have,” said Sarah Grass, ReThink Red Deer project lead.

Grass said she expects 500 to 1,000 people to attend the event.

“We want to showcase the green initiatives happening around Central Alberta,” Grass said.

“The goal is for people to come out and learn about different ways Albertans are already reducing their harmful impacts on the planet and how you can benefit the environment around you.”

Some ways to benefit the environment to be discussed at the fair includes reducing waste, planting trees, reducing carbon footprint and creating green jobs to support the local economy, Grass added.

There will be exhibitors for bee-keeping, nature, astronomy, gardening, seed-saving, education, alternative transportation and more.

“We love to have a variety of things going on,” said Grass. “As long as what (the exhibitors) are doing fits within the theme they are welcome.”

There will be a handful of first-time features at the fair; Western Canada’s first electric school bus will be showcased, there will be a blacksmith demo and a rain barrel sale will be held – this comes just a couple days after World Water Day (Thursday).

Grass said there will be returning favourites as well, such as the repair café.

“If you have something around the home that you aren’t sure how to fix you can bring it in and there will be people on site to help fix it,” she said.

Grass said she hopes some RDC students will be inspired by the fair.

“It’s right on campus so it’s a good chance for students to come and take in a few workshops for the day and also to learn how they can get involved in the community,” she said.

The event will be at The Forum and Margaret Parsons Theatre in RDC’s main campus Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
