An Environmental Appeals Board hearing over an approval to drain stormwater from the Town of Blackfalds into Lacombe Lake is scheduled for June.

The appeal was filed on July 28, 2020 by Anita Alexander, with the help of environmental law charity Ecojustice, after Alberta Environments and Parks approved the North West Stormwater Management Plan, under the Water Act, on July 15, 2020.

Alexander is a Calgary resident, whose family has owned property at Lacombe Lake for 60 years, and is concerned about the effects stormwater will have on the lake.

The project would see stormwater transported to a management facility to be treated and then drained into Lacombe Lake, Whelp Brook and Wolf Creek. The North West Storm Water Plan builds on the Wolf Creek and Whelp Brook Watershed’s Master Drainage Plan.

Submissions will be heard at the hearing on the decisions to approve construction, operation and maintenance of a stormwater management works, as well as the modification of two wetlands, infilling, and construction, operation and maintenance of a linear wetland system.

The Environmental Appeals Board hearing will be conducted on June 14 and 17 via video conference, starting at 8 a.m.
