Event to celebrate newcomers will be held June 24 in Red Deer

Free food and entertainment will be provided on Saturday, June 24, when new central Albertans are welcomed and celebrated in Red Deer.

A Welcome Newcomers event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Festival Hall — and everyone is invited to attend.

The goal is to make newcomers to the area feel “inspired, valued and welcomed” in commemoration of World Refugee Day.

There will be free ethnic food to enjoy, as well as dancers from Uganda (Acholi), Ukraine, Cameroon and Philippines. Also, speakers from Sudan, Somalia, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Ukraine will share their success stories.

“We will be celebrating the newcomers who have enriched our community… past and present, with people who were born here.”

Organizers see this as a great chance to join in the fun and make new friends.

The event is presented by Care for Newcomers, as well as major sponsor Red Deer Polytechnic, and five other local partners.
