A former employee of Baker Hughes Canada has been scheduled for a preliminary hearing on a charge of extortion.

Red Deer City RCMP have charged David Griffith, 37, of Balzac with one count of extortion in relation to his activities during the period from January 2006 through to March 2010, while he was employed with Baker Hughes.

RCMP allege that Griffith used his position with the oilfield service company to get money from a subcontractor.

Griffith has pleaded not guilty and asked to be tried in provincial court. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 31.
