So far Stettler is the only community in Central Alberta to break a record during the extreme cold snap.
Stettler dipped down to -35.3 C overnight on Monday to break the -35.0 C record.
“This is still preliminary at this point. But it does look like Stettler did break a daily temperature record for the overnight low this past night into this morning,” said meteorologist Erin Staunton with Environment and Climate Change Canada.
“I would expect there were other sites in Alberta that did break records, but we’re still collecting the data.”
Red Deer did not break any records on Monday. The temperature dropped to a bone-chilling -37.1 C, but the record was -41.8 C.

Staunton said most of Alberta will continue to experience extreme cold for the next few days. A few sites in southeastern Alberta saw a wind chill of -50 C Tuesday morning.
“We’re not expecting to improve much until the weekend.”
Environment Canada said frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with the wind chill. Motorists should keep emergency supplies in their vehicle, such as extra blankets and jumper cables. And if it’s too cold for humans to stay outside, it’s too cold for pets.

In Red Deer on Wednesday, the temperature is expected to reach a high of -26 C, with a windchill of -41 C in the morning, and -34 C in the afternoon. The temperature is expected to hold steady at -26 C Wednesday night.
A high of -22 C is forecast for Thursday, with a low of -35 C at night.
On Friday, the daytime temperature will reach -27 C, with a low of -30 C at night.
A high of -9 C is forecast for Saturday, with a low of -15 C.
