Red Deer and central Alberta are in for a cold day.

Environment Canada issued an extreme cold warning alert early Wednesday morning, with wind chill values of between -40 C and -45 C.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.

The wind chill will moderate Wednesday for most regions, though parts of far northern Alberta will see wind chill values near -40 C return at night.

Central Albertans should be on the watch for cold-related symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill, so people should cover up.

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools canceled all rural school bus service on Wednesday due to the extreme cold, but schools remain open.

Affected areas include Blackfalds high school, Camille and John Paul service from Blackfalds, Sylvan Lake high school, and Red Deer rural buses only.
