Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for the Red Deer area.

Wind chills near -40C were expected Friday morning and also issued the warning for Stettler, Lacombe and Sundre areas.

Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. People should cover up.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk but is greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

Pets left outdoors are also at risk.
