The Alberta Construction Safety Association’s Parkland Regional Safety Committee is expanding the Fallen Worker Tribute at Bower Ponds.

This expansion includes the start of a food forest, with the planting of three fruit trees and installation of additional seating areas and a picnic table.

This project has been 100 per cent funded by donations from local businesses, organizations and individuals. The grand opening will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. as part of the association’s annual Day of Mourning ceremony at the Bower Ponds Stage.

“We plan to plant an additional fruit tree annually in recognition of the Day of Mourning so there is a visual reminder that not everyone who goes to work comes back home to their families at the end of their shift,” the association said in a press release.

“This year for our grand opening, we are planting three apple trees. One in memory of all workers who have been killed on the job, one in memory of Dr. Walter Reynolds and one in memory of Olymel workers.”

Thursday’s ceremony will include a speech from keynote speaker Wynny Sillito, who will share her experience with workplace tragedy.
