Find out what kind of creature your fossil used to be at the free Stones and Bones drop-in event at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery this weekend.
Collectors of mysterious stones, bones and arrowheads are invited to bring them to the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday, Nov. 26, between 1-4 p.m. They will be identified by Chris Jass, Paleontologist from the Royal Alberta Museum (RAM) and Kyle Forsythe, curator of archaeology from the RAM.
Jass, who has studied Alberta’s Ice Age history for 14 years, is currently detailing the fauna from the Wally’s Beach site in southern Alberta.
Families can also do a “dig” and create some fossilized fun art projects to take home. This free event is presented by the Archaeological Society of Alberta, Red Deer Centre, in partnership with the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery.
“Join us for an informative and family fun day,” said Lynn LeCorre, education co-ordinator at the Red Deer museum.
“We are excited to …offer this new opportunity for the community to inspire a love of archaeology,” added LeCorre. “If you have unique finds in your personal collections… that you want identified, we will bring in experts.”
Anyone who picks up a colouring sheet from the MAG, or prints it from the museum’s website, can bring it back to the museum by Saturday and be entered into a draw to win a mini Archaeology Kit.
Families will learn about the role of archaeologists. Prizes for the contest and museum scavenger hunt will be awarded and refreshments will be served.
