The driver of a farm truck escaped with minor injuries after colliding with a train at a rural crossing south of Olds on Tuesday.
Olds Fire Department were dispatched about 3 p.m. to the scene of the collision at Range Road 15 and Township Road 324.
“Upon arrival, crews found that a single tandem-axle farm vehicle had collided at slow speed with the passing locomotive,” said Olds Fire Chief Justin Andrew in a news release Wednesday. “The collision caused extensive damage to the farm vehicle and locomotive, which created a closure of two crossings on the south side of Olds for approximately three hours.”
The truck’s driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to Olds Hospital by ambulance. The train operators were not hurt.
Emergency crews set up traffic control to reroute drivers away from the crossings while the scene was cleared.
“CP Rail crews responded quickly to repair the locomotive, inspect the tracks, and resume rail activity quickly which allowed the crossings to open within a short period of time,” said Andrew.
Olds RCMP and CP Rail Police Service continue to investigate the cause of this incident.
Andrew reminded drivers that it is their responsibility to ensure that it is safe to cross the tracks.
