Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre is looking for public feedback on the results of its study into employment barriers for older adults, and the needs of employers facing a shortage of skilled, experienced, and available labour.

The Central Alberta Older Adult Employment Strategy Assessment project, which was released in March, suggests a significant lack of awareness among both Central Albertans over 55 and employers regarding existing employment resources, tools and assistance available.

Amber Mack, Golden Circle executive director, said in less than 10 years a quarter of Canada’s population will be 65 and older and the opportunity exists to match older adults looking for work with employers who need workers.

“It’s an opportunity, not a problem. We need to re-frame the conversation as an opportunity for really tapping into the older adult workforce,” Mack said.

She said during the pandemic there was a lot of discussion about the vulnerability of older adults, but as workers they bring they can bring incredible job skills to the table and resiliency.

According to the study, the top skills that older individuals claimed to have were identical to the top needs of employers. The top four skills were: collaboration, adaptability, communication and problem-solving skills.

Mack said hopefully government will explore the matter further and even look at developing a program for older adults similar to the student job placement program.

The study found 17 organizations offered resources, training and employment services, but only two had specific programs or resources for adults over 55.

The report recommended:

• Tailoring employment services, resources and tools for adults over 55.

• Implementing a system navigator to streamline employment opportunities for those adults.

• Developing resources in collaboration with diverse community organizations, adults over 55 and employers to improve the recognition of and reduction of ageism, in the workplace.
