A Lacombe man is accused of assaulting and choking his female companion while camping near Innisfail.

A distraught female camping where the Red Deer and Medicine rivers meet called police for help at approximately 12:50 a.m. Friday.

The alleged victim was stuck on the south side of the river and could not leave the situation, say Innisfail RCMP, who called upon the help of many agencies during the incident.

The high river flow and the secluded area complicated the situation.

Fritz Solberg, 38, is charged with assault causing bodily harm, choking to overcome resistance, intimidation, uttering threats and theft under $5,000.

Solberg will appear in Red Deer provincial court Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
