Central Alberta Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders is hosting a barbecue and presentation to raise awareness on Monday.

Each year, International FASD Awareness Day is celebrated on Sept. 9, with communities traditionally pausing at 9:09 a.m., on the ninth hour of the ninth month, representing the nine months of pregnancy.

It is meant to be a moment to pause, reflect, share the prevention message and support alcohol-free pregnancy around the world, says the local group.

The event will see an award presented to an individual or group that has made significant contributions to the FASD community.

Red Deer’s event takes pace at The Hub on Ross, 4936 Ross St. It begins with mocktails at 8:45 a.m., with the welcome and introduction of speakers at 8:55 a.m.

An award presentation takes place at 11:15 a.m., followed by the free barbecue at 11:30 a.m.
