Fiery collision occurs in downtown Red Deer after suspected car jackings

Local RCMP officers are investigating armed car-jackings that were reported on Monday in Red Deer and Lacombe

At about 5:25 p.m., Red Deer RCMP received a 911 call of an armed car-jacking that had just occurred in the area of 50 Avenue in Red Deer.

A male suspect is also believed to have been involved in an armed car-jacking in the City of Lacombe that was brought to the attention of the RCMP at about 4:35 p.m. when a “be on the lookout” notice was issued by Lacombe Police Service.

Police believe a male suspect abandoned the stolen vehicle from Lacombe, then shortly after, brandishing a firearm, made off with another vehicle, in which he fled northbound on Gaetz Avenue.

Red Deer RCMP located the first stolen vehicle and then attempted to stop the second vehicle, however, the suspect didn’t pull over.

A short time later, the suspect drove through an intersection at 48 Street and 49 Avenue and collided with a pick-up truck.

Fire services were required to extinguish fires caused by the collision.

EMS were at the scene to provide assistance.

The suspect sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment where he remains at this time. The other driver was taken to hospital with injuries that were non-life threatening.

Red Deer RCMP, with the assistance of an RCMP collision reconstructionist, continue to investigate this incident. The area of 48 Street and 49 Avenue remained closed to traffic while Red Deer RCMP completed their examination of the scene.

Further updates will be provided when available.
