Fire destroys home east of Rocky Mountain House

A home just east of Rocky Mountain house was completely destroyed after a fire on Monday evening.

Three people were inside the house when the blaze broke out but all escaped without injury.

One person suffered minor injuries unrelated to the fire when attempting to get into a locked car to go seek help, said Clearwater Regional Fire Rescue Services deputy fire chief Paul Prevost.

No firefighters were injured.

Crews received the call around 5:15 p.m. and arrived to a find the house already engulfed in flames, Prevost said.

The single-storey house with a developed basement was located on Tiami Road, just off of Range Road 65.

According to Prevost, it took a couple of hours to gain full control of the situation due to water supply issues.

“Being out of town, you have to use the tanker trucks to haul water from town to fight the fire and it was cold, around -20C the guys said,” he said.

The house was a total loss, Prevost said, estimating damages at approximately $300,000.

“It got to the point where we couldn’t overhaul it because it was unsafe so we had to knock it down with a track hoe.”

Crews were able to recover little items, such as photo albums, for the two women who were living at the property.

The Red Cross said on Wednesday that it is helping the women with food, clothing and accommodations.

The fire is still under investigation but Prevost said he believes it may have started because of cooking.

Crews from Condor, Rocky Mountain House and Leslieville were all on scene.
