Fire kills 300 goats near Clive

Three hundred goats died in a fire near Clive.

On Sunday, farmer Meindert Dijkstra, came home around 10:30 p.m. and saw one of the buildings on his farm on Range Road 244, south of Clive, was up in smoke.

The barn housed an estimated 300 milking goats.

Dijkstra said there was no one home from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. and it happened around that time.

Dijkstra said the firefighters are investigating the case.

Although the building that was on fire is a total loss, he said, it was insured.

He said it will at least take a year to rebuild because he lost most of his milking goats in the fire.

About 50-60 goats were saved, because they were in a different barn.
