A small fire in an ironing unit in Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre’s laundry was quickly brought under control by laundry staff Wednesday morning.

The hospital wasn’t evacuated and there were no injuries though two laundry workers were examined for smoke inhalation.

Red Deer Emergency Services got the call at 9:46 a.m. and arrived two minutes later to find some smoke coming from the laundry’s overhead door on the hospital’s northwest side.

“Staff did initially suppress the fire with extinguishers,” said EMS spokesman Mike Godwin at the scene.

He said he couldn’t yet estimate the extent or cost of damage that was limited to the ironing unit.

Traffic was rerouted around a closed 43rd Street while Emergency Services worked.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
