The sale and use of fireworks in Red Deer is now regulated after city council gave second and third reading to Fireworks Bylaw at Tuesday’s meeting.

“The reality is fireworks are dangerous explosives that have the potential to cause harm to people and property,” said Ken McMullen, emergency services manager/chief. “This bylaw regulates the use of fireworks and ensures only qualified persons use fireworks and work with Emergency Services to ensure measures are in place to protect the safety of both the user and bystanders.”

Effective immediately, a fireworks permit is required for the use of all fireworks including display fireworks (used by professionals for events such as Canada Day), pyrotechnics (used for stage shows and movie effects), and consumer fireworks. The sale of fireworks in Red Deer in prohibited within city limits.
