First-ever Masters Games to get underway in central Alberta

The Town of Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County are set to host Alberta’s inaugural Alberta Masters Games Aug. 22 to 25.

The Town of Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County are set to host Alberta’s inaugural Alberta Masters Games Aug. 22 to 25.

The Games provide an opportunity for athletes 30 years of age or more to compete in a province-wide sports competition.

“Alberta’s first Masters Games contribute to the province’s storied legacy for hosting multi-sport games and help encourage lasting active lifestyles,” said Leela Sharon Aheer, Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women, responsible for sport.

“They also highlight the importance of collaboration and community, like the partnership between the Town of Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County to host the inaugural Games. Congratulations to the organizers, thanks to the volunteers, supporters and sponsors, and best of luck to all the competitors. I know it will be an event to remember.”

The Masters Games offer 12 sports, opening ceremonies, and two nights of live outdoor concerts. Approximately 1,000 participants, their families and spectators are expected to attend the Games.

The Alberta government provided $200,000 in support of the 2019 Alberta Masters Games through Alberta Sport Connection (ASC).

“Congratulations to the Town of Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County on hosting our province’s inaugural Masters Games”, said . “These Games are a tremendous opportunity for our province’s masters-aged athletes to participate and stay active while competing in a province-wide multi-sport competition,” says Stephen Norris, Chair of ASC.

The Alberta Masters Games are coordinated by Alberta Sport Connection in partnership with the host community. ASC is a provincial crown corporation dedicated to the development of sport in Alberta. Its vision is for Alberta to be the premier sport delivery system in Canada.
