2022 was a welcome return to normal in the Town of Penhold, says Mayor Michael Yargeau.
After two years of COVID-19, the town located south of Red Deer was able to host all of its regular community events that had to be cancelled or modified due to the pandemic.
“This was probably our most normal year in a while,” said Yargeau.
“Penhold is at its best when the community can come together and for a couple of years we weren’t able to do that. This year, all of our regular events were able to come back – being able to be with each other again was really good.”
This past year, the town was able to break ground on its community hub project, which features a recreation area around the Penhold Multiplex, Yargeau explained.
“We’ve been working towards that for a number of years now. We were finally get some money together and start it,” said Yargeau.
“The first phase of our community hub will be completed in early 2023.”
When complete, the hub will include a new baseball diamond development, trail connectivity, furnishings, a common area, washrooms, and finalized work on the pump track and skate park.
The project was made possible through a donation from Stewart and Eileen Ford, a long-standing local family, as well as an investment of $490,000 from the Government of Canada through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund.
Yargeau said there will be announcements soon regarding new projects in the area.
