A five-year-old is in life-threatening condition after being ejected from a vehicle during a collision in Central Alberta.

Just after 4 p.m. on Saturday, a suspect vehicle being described as a white truck overtook a family SUV and began breaking aggressively in front of them, Didsbury RCMP said in a statement.

The SUV lost contact with the road surface while attempting to avoid a rear end collision with the suspect vehicle.

The SUV rolled through the median ditch before coming to rest along the fence. As a result of the SUV rolling, one child under 5-years of age was ejected from the vehicle and is in life threatening condition, having been flown by STARS Air Ambulance to hospital.

The four other occupants, two child and two adults are also in serious condition and were transported by ground ambulance to area hospital. The suspect vehicle did not remain at the scene.

The suspect truck and family SUV were both travelling south bound on Highway 2, approximately 2 kilometres south of the Hwy 581 over pass near Carstairs.

Emergency medical services and a RCMP collision analyst attended the scene.

Highway 2, north and southbound, were restricted south of Hwy 581 to one lane of travel in both directions in the immediate aftermath. Motorists were asked to seek different routes as traffic was be disrupted for several hours while police investigated.

Didsbury RCMP is asking that anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have dashboard camera footage of the collision to contact the Didsbury RCMP.

Anyone with information or dashboard footage is asked to contact Didsbury RCMP at 403-335-3382. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the P3 Tips app.
