Food trucks are expected to continue returning to Red Deer’s Capstone neighbourhood for at least a few more weeks.

This year’s edition of Food Truck Fridays, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Friday, has operated at Canada 150 Square for the first time.

“We’re super happy to be down here,” said Carmen Harrison, owner of Queen Bees Food Truck and an organizer with Food Truck Fridays.

“There’s a lot of seating, garbage cans and a really nice space to sit and walk around. It’s beautiful.”

While it’s not a guarantee the weekly event will run through all of September, Harrison said the goal is to run it for at least three weeks into next month, as long as the weather co-operates.

There are five trucks that participate in Food Truck Fridays: Roly Quacamole, Queen Bees, Simple Spice, Lil’ Orbits and 3 Pink Flamingos. If the event grows, it’s possible an additional rotating truck will be brought into the fold.

The past couple years of Food Truck Fridays have been held at the Westerner Park parking lot. Due to COVID-19, a lot of the Food Truck Fridays opportunities were held in a drive-thru format. Harrison said it’s been exciting to have a more traditional Food Truck Fridays run this year.

“It’s so nice to be back and have the community come together again. It’s definitely a little smaller (than it has been in the past). But I think when people catch on to where we are, I think it will continue to grow,” she said.

The plan is to return to Capstone next year, Harrison added.

“I feel like next year we’ll put a little more signage out so the main traffic (from Taylor Drive) can see that we’re here,” said Harrison.

“Overall I think we all have a good following, so we get a good turnout each week.”
