Red Deerians are able to take in a drive-thru food truck experience once again this year.
Both Food Truck Drive and Dash, and Food Truck Fridays have returned to the Westerner Park parking lot. The events run every Thursday from 4:30-7:30 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“You pick the truck you want to go to, you drive up and there’s an attendant outside each truck to take your order. They might ask you to pull to the side to wait, or if it’s quick they may say, ‘Stay right there.’ They’ll bring you out your food, so you don’t even have to get out of your car,” said Jonathan Strome, event organizer.
Strome said he doesn’t expect any new restrictions will be introduced that would impact drive-thru events like these.
“The odds of us not being able to continue, we hope, are slim. Of course we don’t know the future, but we’re definitely optimistic we’ll be able to run all summer,” he said.
The first food truck events of the year were held last week. Strome said they’re thrilled to be back.
“The one thing about operating food trucks is you get used to seeing people every week through the summer and you take this long six-month hiatus over the winter. You miss your customers and there’s something great about being back and seeing those friendly faces again,” said Strome.
Even though the weather wasn’t great during the first Thursday and Friday, the first week went well, said Strome.
“We started earlier than we normally do this year. Typically we don’t start until the third week of May, so we started two weeks earlier than usual,” he said.
“A lot of people may have not even caught that we were open yet. Often people don’t think food trucks will be out when the weather is so hit and miss, but rain or shine we’ll be here Thursdays and Fridays.”
Attendees do not need to pay parking or admission fees.
