CALGARY — A former Calgary police officer has been handed an eight-month jail term after pleading guilty to accessing sexually explicit material involving children.

Thomas Buttle, who is 34, entered the plea in December 2018.

Two other child pornography related charges were withdrawn during his sentencing hearing.

The court heard that in January 2018, police started investigating a social media user who was uploading child pornography.

The four-year member of the Calgary force was arrested and charged with accessing more than 4,000 pornographic images.

Buttle, who faces a year of probation upon release, was placed on administrative leave following his arrest. (CTV Calgary)
