Four prisoners in the Red Deer Remand Centre have been charged for their involvement in a jail house riot earlier this month.

Around 5:10 p.m. on March 5, Red Deer RCMP were called in to assist correctional officers in managing a disturbance in one of the cell units.

Police say a minor misunderstanding escalated into violence when an inmate allegedly swung his fist at a correctional officer and made threats.

Several inmates joined the fray with “acts of aggression and vandalism.”

No correctional officers or inmates were injured during the incident.

Most inmates returned to their cells to avoid the conflict and the rest were returned to their cells by 5:40 p.m.

At that time, the RCMP dog service searched the unit to ensure that all inmates were secure.

The streets around the Remand Centre were closed as a precaution at the onset and were re-opened at approximately 6:30 p.m. that evening.

Damage to one cell pod is estimated at between $20,000 and $25,000.

Chol Achuil Chol, 27, is charged with assault on peace officer, uttering threats, mischief over $5,000 and participating in a riot. He appears in Red Deer provincial court on April 8.

John Tuik Jok, 26, is charged with mischief over $5,000 and participating in a riot. He appears in Red Deer provincial court on April 15.

Diing Geng, 22, is charged with mischief over $5,000 and participating in a riot. He will make his first court appearance on April 1.

Athiang Geng, 23, is charged with mischief over $5,000 and participating in a riot. He appears in Red Deer provincial court on April 9.
