Red Deerians will have four days to look through the items available at the Friends of the Red Deer Public Library Book Sale this upcoming week.

The event will run in the Snell Auditorium in the downtown library branch’s basement on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“This is a bigger sale than we usually have – it’s normally three days,” said Lesley Caddy, Friends of the Red Deer Public Library president.

“But because of COVID, we didn’t have a sale for a couple of years, so we’ve had a lot more books than usual. It’s exciting to be back, see some familiar faces, see the volunteers again and make some money for the library.”

This will be the second book sale of 2022 – one was held in the spring.

The Friends of the Red Deer Public Library, which has been around for about 30 years, has funded a number of projects since its inception.

Some recent projects the nonprofit funded include: furnishings for temporary popup branch at Bower Place, outside book drop at the Dawe branch and a service dog for the library to help children in the reading program.

The book sale is one of the bigger fundraisers for the Friends of the Red Deer Public Library.

“It takes three solid days to set up. The books come in year-round and we’ve got about 20 volunteers who help. They put in about 700 hours during the year,” said Caddy.

“We have it twice a year and it makes about $1,700 a year. We also have a year-round bookstore on the main floor of the downtown library, which makes about $1,000 a month. It’s all used books that we sell.”

There will be thousands of books, DVDs, CDs, comic books, magazines and more available at the book sale. There will be books in every genre and book for every age group for sale, Caddy noted.

In February, the Friends of the Red Deer Public Library will host its second casino event. In May, the group will sell Mother’s Day gift bags.
