Fuel theft reported in Gasoline Alley

Central Alberta RCMP encourage people to report crime

A fuel theft was reported at Gasoline Alley business early Friday morning and RCMP are encouraging people to report similar thefts.

Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, with Alberta RCMP media relations, said Blackfalds RCMP responded to the area after police received a report at 4:25 a.m. about a person with a dark vehicle who was spotted siphoning fuel from a fuel tank in a business yard.

He said the detachment wasn’t seeing a noticeable increase in these thefts, but this type of crime is also vastly under reported.

“We would encourage anybody who has any theft, even if it’s minor in nature, to please report it to the RCMP because it’s invaluable information for us,” Savinkoff said.

He said knowing what crimes are happening helps RCMP to direct its resources.

Red Deer RCMP warn residents of gasoline thefts

Early this year, Red Deer RCMP warned of holes being drilled into vehicle gas tanks, or cut gas lines, to steal gasoline.

Savinkoff said when thieves go after fuel tanks at businesses, they are are looking to steal a lot of fuel, likely for stolen vehicles, and are connected to other sorts of crime.
