About 50 residents of a South Red Deer apartment building were evacuated on Tuesday after a suspected gas leak was reported.
Carol Lind, emergency management co-ordinator for the City of Red Deer, said one of the tenants smelled gas and called ATCO to report a possible gas leak at 69 Ironstone Drive.
The City of Red Deer’s Emergency Services department was also notified at about 1:15 p.m., and the four-storey building was evacuated, added Lind. Ironstone Drive, from 30 Avenue to Inglewood Drive, was closed to traffic and motorists were asked to avoid the area.
The city sent some transit buses to the spot to provide warm spaces for the evacuated residents to wait while crews were investigating the building for a suspected gas leak.
By 5 p.m. the investigation was over, the leak was fixed, and residents were let back into the building. The City of Red Deer did not provide information on what caused the leak.
But Emergency Services crews were expected to remain on scene for ongoing monitoring and Ironstone Drive was expected to re-open to traffic by 6 p.m.
