This summer Red Deer proved it’s Canada’s Most Active Community and citizens are invited to celebrate the win at the Community Better Celebration at the Collicutt Centre on Oct. 15, from 12 to 3 p.m.

Red Deer beat out more than 1,700 communities across Canada during the month-long ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge in June.

Red Deer is also the first Alberta community to win.

Mayor Ken Johnston will welcome people to the celebration at 12 p.m. and they will be able to participate in a variety of free activities including swimming from 12 to 3 p.m., skating from 12:30 to 2 p.m. (bring your own skates), and wall climbing from 2 to 3 p.m.

Fieldhouse activities from 12 to 3 p.m. include badminton, pickleball, basketball, volleyball and the boulder wall.

Mascots will be on site, and there will be some giveaways and prizes to be won.

“We’re hoping we’ll get lots of people out to come and celebrate and be active together,” said Denise Fredeen, Move Your Mood co-ordinator with Alberta Health Services and Community Better committee representative.

It was decided that the celebration would be held in October after the rush of summer activities and Thanksgiving.

She said community groups that logged activity minutes during the ParticipACTION challenge to help the city win will have tables set up from 12 to 3 p.m. to showcase how people can remain active with their groups throughout the year.

Red Deer received $100,000 as the top ParticipACTION community in the nation and representatives from a variety of community agencies have been looking at how best to allocate the funds.

“We will have more information on how the money will be spent. We will have other opportunities like Saturdays, and we are looking at how the community can apply for mini-grants to get their area of the city active,” Fredeen said.
