Copper Lane Hair Studios has partnered with central Alberta businesses and raised almost $10,000 for the Girls Need You project.
The money will be used support the sewing and disbursement of reusable feminine hygiene kits for girls in Kenya. It’s an area where limited water access, restricted sanitation, and no trash service, means feminine hygiene products are often overlooked.
With no way of coping with their periods each month, women are often forced to miss school or work to stay within their rooms and wait until their period is finished.
Lane Tomalty, owner of Copper Lane Hair Studios in Red Deer and Lacombe, initiated the partnership between A Better World, central Alberta businesses, and Kenyan sewing groups to provide these kits.
Funds raised go directly to a local sewing group in Kenya, who then create the hygiene kits, and ABW’s in-country project manager distributes the kits to girls who need them.
Lane Tomalty, and her father Neil, also supported new toilets for the Koige ECD School in Kenya this year. After travelling to Kenya with ABW, they were inspired to invest in new toilets for the students to improve privacy, comfort, and accessibility.
