The Gord Bamford Charity Golf Classic is going ahead in Lacombe on Thursday and Friday — but without the evening gala.

That portion of the event had to be cancelled, due to the pandemic, said Corinne Szepesi, manager of the Gord Bamford Foundation.

There will still be brushes with celebrity as teams of golfers bid for the chance to be accompanied onto the greens by such well-known entertainers as Clayton Bellamy, Dwayne Steele and Dallas Smith — as well as hockey players Theo Fleury and Rob Brown and other athletes, including Olympic bobsledder Alysia Rissling.

Szepesi said 13 celebrities will be in the live auction as part of the fundraising tournament at the Lacombe Golf and Country Club. The 14th annual Gord Bamford Charity Golf Classic will also feature about 280 golfers from participating businesses and corporations in central Alberta as well as Edmonton and Calgary.

No fundraising goal has been set for this year’s tournament, due to the cancellation of the gala. But Szepesi said whatever money is raised will go to this year’s feature charity — the Hockey Alberta Foundation, which provides an opportunity for “every kid in every community” to play hockey, regardless of financial means.
