Grenade scare forces evacuation at Legion building

A disarmed grenade has been safely removed from the office of the Royal Canadian Legion in Stettler.

A disarmed grenade has been safely removed from the office of the Royal Canadian Legion in Stettler.

President Kevin Milner said the Second World War grenade, its pin still intact, had been in a box of items donated to the branch a number of months ago. Milner had examined the grenade himself and discovered a hole drilled in the bottom, presuming therefore that it was no longer live.

However, because the branch did not wish to display the grenade, he called the RCMP to ask about the proper means of getting rid of it.

The local detachment contacted the RCMP bomb unit, which passed the job on to military staff at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, said Milner.

As a precaution, the branch was closed for a couple of hours on Wednesday while military staff examined the grenade and then packed it up for disposal.

They took it all apart, and then they took it away, said Milner.

Sgt. Rowland Schmidt, head of the Stettler RCMP detachment, said preliminary results indicate the grenade was deactivated, but it will take some time to confirm that.
