Grizzly cubs killed in collision near wildlife underpass on Alberta highway

Two grizzly bear cubs have been killed in a collision on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Calgary.

CALGARY —

Alberta Parks says the bears died early Wednesday morning near an area known as Dead Man’s Flats.

The department says a wildlife fence in the area that’s designed to prevent animals from crossing the road had been taken down for repairs after last year’s flood.

Tim Chamberlin, a department spokesman, says the fence was about a week away from being completed.

Chamberlin says it’s unfortunate because the cubs were killed about a kilometre from where a wildlife underpass is located.

He’s reminding drivers to be aware that wildlife could be on the roads during the late summer and early autumn, and to keep to the speed limit during the dusk and dawn hours. (CHQR)
