Here’s your chance to name the chicks

We want you to help name the peregrine falcon brood on top of the Telus tower.

We want you to help name the peregrine falcon brood on top of the Telus tower.

This spring, the Red Deer River Naturalists invested in a webcam, with the help of partners Telus and Alberta Fish and Wildlife, that watches a nesting box high atop a telecommunications tower in north Red Deer’s Highland Green neighbourhood.

Since April 24, thousands of people from around the world have been logging on the webcam to watch the parents — Perry the female and WIndsong the male — protect their eggs. There are now three eggs.

The eggs are getting ready to hatch, and whether there are three chicks or fewer, they could use a good name from Advocate readers. The due date is around Wednesday, June 9.

Judy Boyd, spokeswoman for the Red Deer River Naturalists, said the contest is a good way to promote the peregrine falcons and educate people about these birds.

Entries must be submitted before 11:59 p.m. on June 10 online at www.reddeeradvocate.com and find the “Contest” link. One entry per person or group, such as a school class. Maximum three names per entry. Name and phone or email will be required. Entries must be from Central Alberta.

The top entries will be published in the Advocate and judged by a panel consisting of newsroom staff and members of the Red Deer River Naturalists.

The three winners will each receive a $50 gift card from the Kerry Wood Nature Centre bookstore.
