The Alberta Schools Athletic Association won’t hold its provincial Track and Field Championships this spring.

In an announcement Tuesday, the organization, which oversees high school sports in the province, said that public health guidelines from the Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services make it impractical to hold inter-school events.

“The government of Alberta and AHS directives currently do not permit any interschool sport activities at this time and there is simply no option where track and field provincials could be held in the foreseeable future,” a memo from ASAA executive director John Paton reads.

“The health and safety of students, coaches and others involved in school athletics remains the first priority of the ASAA and this decision supports that notion.”

The event was scheduled to be hosted in Medicine Hat, from June 4-5. Basketball Provincials and Curling Provincials, which were scheduled for March, were cancelled earlier this year.

School sports have returned in a limited capacity over the past month, with practices being limited to 10 people, physical distancing and masks being worn by all participants.
