Heavy fog was a contributing factor to a three vehicle collision at the north end of Gasoline Alley Friday morning. As an RCMP member was diverting traffic off of the QE2 onto Gaetz Ave. in Red Deer. A parked police cruiser was hit by the tractor trailer unit and the RCMP member was reported to have had to run to avoid being hit by the truck. The RCMP member was transported to hospital by another RCMP member with undetermined injuries.

RCMP have now reopened Hwy 2 near Red Deer after two multi-vehicle collisions this morning.

Vehicles started piling up near the 67th Street overpass at about 8:15 a.m. as fog thickened in the area.

Another multi-vehicle collision occurred at the 32nd Street overpass, closing both north-bound lanes of the highway between the 32nd Street and 67th Street overpasses.

As traffic was being diverted into Red Deer from Gasoline Alley, a semi trailer jackknifed near 50th Street entrance at about 8:40 a.m.

The trailer rear-ended the pickup truck it was following, then the trailer smashed into the police vehicle positioned to divert traffic. The officer, who was not in the police cruiser, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Northbound traffic in Gasoline Alley was diverted onto McKenzie Road.

The highway between 32nd and 67th Street overpasses was closed for more than two hours this morning.

Visibility was reduced due to the fog.
