With students returning to classrooms, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health is stressing the importance of preventing spread of communicable diseases.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw took to Twitter this past Friday to remind Albertans of what they can do to prevent the spread of illnesses like COVID-19, including staying home when sick, washing hands regularly and staying up to date on all routine immunizations.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted routine childhood immunization schedules worldwide, leaving many at higher risk of vaccine-preventable diseases such as polio and measles,” Hinshaw said.

“Increased risk anywhere in the world is also an increased risk to us, as imported diseases can quickly spread through our population – particularly in communities with lower immunization rates.”

Hinshaw encouraged Albertans to access the vaccines they are eligible for as “an important layer of protection” against infectious diseases.

“I would like to thank all of the hard working public healthcare professionals who have helped to keep up immunization schedules whenever possible and the support of schools and parents as we continue to work to increase numbers – let’s keep it up,” said Hinshaw.

All Albertans 14 and older can access their vaccination records to check if they are up to date on their immunizations at www.alberta.ca/myhealthrecords.
