Dahlia tuber sale
More than 50 varieties of dahlia tubers and cuttings will be up for grabs during Alberta Dahlia and Gladiolus Society’s annual dahlia tuber sale. It will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 16 at Echo Glen (McArthur residence) 1.2 km south of the 19th Street and 40th Avenue intersection in Red Deer. Brighten the corner where you live, work or play with a spring makeover including new works created by local artists. Barbara Checkryn-Rivers, who lives in the Eagle Hill area northwest of Olds, will be the featured artist at the Olds Art Club’s annual spring show and sale this weekend. Members will set up at the Olds College Library from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Here’s a chance to garner some money for homelessness projects. The City of Red Deer and Community Housing Advisory Board request letters of intent for projects that address homelessness. The Red Deer College Big Band will swing into spring with a special jazz night on April 8. Music by Canadian artists Oscar Peterson, Maynard Ferguson, Diana Krall and Michael Bublé will be covered during Jazz Night — Canada Swings at the college’s Mainstage beginning at 7:30 p.m. Special guest is Eric Allison, formerly of Sylvan Lake, a full-time professional musician for more than 30 years, playing alto and tenor saxophone, flute and clarinet. He has recorded three CDs and now lives in Florida. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $9 for children, seniors and students. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or at the door.
