A company that purchases coins, paper currency, gold and silver will be in Red Deer from Dec. 13 to 17. The event, free and open to the public, is being held by International Coin Collectors at the Red Deer Lodge. The company has specialists who meet individually with people to evaluate their items and make offers to purchase gold and silver coins made before 1965, and paper money printed before 1934. The amount of the offer depends on the silver or gold content, collectability, rarity and condition of items. The show hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Dec. 13 to 16, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 17.


The Festival of Lights celebration will take place Dec. 21, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the CARE Club at the Red Deer Public Library. Jan Underwood, public awareness co-ordinator with Central Alberta Refugee Effort, will help lead the way through various celebration traditions around the world, such as Yule, Saint Lucia, Las Posadas, Hanuukkah, Diwali, Eid and Christmas. Dancing, singing, stories and snacks will be part of the event. This event is aimed at ages six and older. Families are welcome to attend. The event is co-sponsored by CARE and the library.
