Recycling award
Innisfail Junior Senior High School has been given $5,000 award for its recycling program by executive members of the Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation. As well, the 615 students each received a T-shirt. Innisfail students recycled more beverage containers in the province than any other school in that particular size category, collecting 181,000 containers and making $18,000 in profit last school year. Students collect containers from more than 10 bins at the school every week and a staff member helps take them to the bottle depot. The money raised goes to activities in the school like band, athletic programs and field trips.
Charity supported
Canadian Western Bank will invest more than $5,000 to a Red Deer area youth organization, thanks to its generous customers. The Red Deer branch raised $5,531 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Red Deer and District during September and October. Canadian Western Bank worked together with its customers to invest $300,000 in children’s charities across Western Canada as part of The Greater Interest GIC campaign. For every dollar clients invested in the campaign, the bank donated one-eighth back to the community. “We work hard to support and strengthen the communities that our customers call home, even when economic times are tough,” said Don Odell, assistant vice-president and branch manager in Red Deer.
Nominees wanted
Nominees are now being sought for inductees to the Albert Sports Hall of Fame, which recognizes extraordinary achievement in sport. Ten inductees are being sought in six categories, including athlete, team, builder, media, pioneer and achievement. Nominations remain open until Jan. 31.
