Give a gobble
A Red Deer fitness club is offering prospective members a chance to tighten their own thighs while giving someone else a better Christmas. The Red Deer Curves Give A Gobble promotion will waive the initial membership fee from Monday through Friday, Dec. 11, for people who bring in a turkey or a $30 contribution to the Salvation Army’s Adopt-A-Family program. Curves manager Sheila Crouch says her goal is to donate 20 turkeys to the program. To learn more, contact Crouch at the Red Deer South Curves, 403-343-7560 or Pat Pickering at Red Deer North Curves, 403-348-0642.
Fire bans lifted
Fire bans have been lifted throughout Central Alberta, although some counties are still asking people to use caution. Cold weather and a few centimetres of snow have reduced the fire hazard, say officials from Lacombe and Red Deer Counties. Allan Weiss, fire services manager for Red Deer County, said burning barrel permits issued before the ban remain valid. Camperfires are allowed except in Woodland Hills, but must be contained within an acceptable fire pit. Visit www.albertafirebans.ca for information about fire bans and advisories.
