Vigil planned

The 20th anniversary of the killings of 14 women at the L’ecole Polytechnique de Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989, will be remembered in Red Deer on Sunday. Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers will recognize the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, starting at 5 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church at 4718 Ross St. Emergency shelter executive director Ian Wheeliker will make a presentation and refreshments will be on hand. A candlelight vigil will follow at 6 p.m. at City Hall Park to honour all women who have died due to violence. For more information, call Anita at 346-5643.

Charity event

Red Deer fire-medics will put their legs and lungs to work on Saturday to beef up the funds in their Children’s Charity account. In what they hope will become an annual event, the fire-medics are setting up a stairclimber at Bower Place Shopping Centre from noon until 5 p.m. Fire-medics taking part in the fundraiser have asked for pledges based on the number of flights of stairs they climb during their 30-minute turns on the stair climber. Money raised goes into the fund, which is used at the fire-medics’ discretion to provide financial support for children in need.
