Skiers, it’s time to wax your skis. The 27th annual Red Deer Ski Loppet returns to the River Bend Golf and Recreation area on Feb. 4. Pre-register by Feb. 1 online at www.zone4.ca. There is a $10 additional fee for late registrants who enter on race day. Fees are $10 for 13 and under (jackrabbits); $20 for 14 to 17 years (junior girls/junior boys); $25 for 18 years and older (men and women) and $50 for family three-km and family five-km. The Alberta Emerald Foundation will share environmental success stories, plus environmental opportunities and challenges in Red Deer on Friday, Feb. 3. People have the chance to learn more about Emerald Day at Red Deer College from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Hosted by Servus Credit Union, this event is free and there will be locally made refreshments on hand. Guests will enjoy displays, plus speakers in the Forum area of the college. Mayor Morris Flewwelling will proclaim Emerald Day and Simon Jackson will speak at 3 p.m. in the Margaret Parsons Theatre. Jackson is the founder and executive director of the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition. Honoured by Time Magazine as one of Sixty Heroes for the Planet, Simon will share his inspiring message of the power of youth.
