Walk and wag
The Red Deer and District SPCA is launching a new dog walkathon fundraiser. Walk and Wag will take place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the local SPCA, which is located at 4505 77th St. Bring your family, friends and pets to enjoy the dog walkathon, scavenger hunt and festival. Pledge forms are available at the SPCA and will soon be available online at www.reddeerspca.com. Walk and Wag is replacing the Red Deer and District SPCA’s Bark at the Bend.
Classical music performed by Red Deer youth will be on the agenda on Friday at the Hub on Ross Street. Olivia Smith, youth, volunteer co-ordinator, says the event begins at 6 p.m. and tickets are $10 each, which includes refreshments and pastries. Vocalists, along with special guests Cheryl Valentine and Jane Mueller, will also perform. Proceeds will go to the Earthdance, which is the 2011 charity of choice. Tables will also be set up to support Red Deer Loaves and Fishes and the Somali Women’s Scholarship program. Tickets can be bought at the Hub, located at 4936 Ross St.
End human Trafficking
Walking to help raise money to stamp out human trafficking is the aim of a 10-km walk on June 11 in Red Deer. The Magdalene House Society and the Red Deer Knights of Columbus are sponsoring the event, which begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Knights Hall at 5579 47th St. Knights spokesman David Bouchard says people can sponsor a walker or donate on the Magdalene web page at www.magdalenehouse.ca. Magdalene House is a not-for-profit charitable society set up to assist persons who are trafficked for sex or labour purposes in Canada. Any trafficked person can access the services provided by the society.
