Rethink your food
This is not your grandmother’s garden patch, says ReThink Red Deer. Food sovereignty, food security and 100-mile diets are among the factors encouraging urban gardeners to enter a new realm of food production. What had been a quaint hobby has become an economy-building activity, says volunteer Rene Michalak. To help people weed out the details they need, Rethink Red Deer will host an urban gardening presentation including the short film, A Thousand Suns, at Red Deer College on Monday. The session is set for 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Margaret Parsons Theatre at Red Deer College. Visit www.sustainablereddeer
Philosopher's café
The Philosopher’s Café brings into the open a topic most people tend to avoid during its Thursday session. Red Deer College philosophy instructor Guillermo Barron will lead a discussion entitled Death: The Unknown Country, taking place in the college library at 7 p.m. All are welcome to take part in the discussion, the last Philosopher’s Café for the 2009-10 school year. A schedule for 2010-11 will be released in summer. Admission and snacks are free. Visit www.rdc.ab.ca/library or call 403-342-3152 to learn more.
Battery check
The province is reminding Albertans that as they spring ahead on Sunday, they should take the time to check the batteries in their smoke alarms. Because batteries last an average of one year, a good time to check and if necessary replace them is when setting clocks forward for daylight time each spring, according to a government news release. Provincial fire statistics indicate that in residential fires, 42 per cent of homes did not have smoke alarms installed. In cases where smoke alarms were installed, only 36 per cent of the alarms are known to have been activated, with the failure of smoke alarms due to lack of a power source.
