People with a taste for gourmet food, decadent desserts and celebrity waiters will get their fill at the Making Sweet Memories gala dinner on Saturday, March 27, at the Holiday Inn on 67th Street in Red Deer. There is a waiter for every taste. Waiters include singer/ songwriter Duane Steele, symphony conductor Claude Lapalme, citizen of the year Lyn Radford, and Red Deer Advocate personalities Internet guru Leo Paré and celebrated columnist Jim Sutherland. Other waiters are magazine owner Kim Berube; radio personalities Gloria Evans, Kelsey Cross, and Greg Shannon; city councillor/former policeman Buck Buchanan; Canada’s worst handyman and Red Deer Express editor Johnny Bachusky; and Chamber of Commerce official Rick More. The gala will include a silent auction, raffles and entertaining waiters who will try to outdo each other for tips. Tickets are $75 with a tax receipt for $35. Grants available

Registered Canadian charities that serve Central Alberta can apply to the Red Deer and District Community Foundation for the spring grants program for 2010. Information on applying and applications is available from Kristine Bugayong, grants co-ordinator, at 403-341-6911. Deadline for submissions is April 1 at 4:30 p.m.


Awards deadline

The nomination deadline for the Red Deer Heritage Recognition Awards is April 1. The awards, now in their eighth year and sponsored by the city’s Heritage Preservation Committee, recognize outstanding efforts in heritage preservation in the city and Red Deer County. Award categories range from advocacy, to community revitalization, to conservation or preservation of natural or built heritage. Nomination forms, with a complete description of categories, are available at the Red Deer and District Archives, Red Deer County office or on the county website at www.reddeercounty.ab.ca. The awards presentation will take place on June 4.
