The Magic Of Writing
The next Margaret Atwood or Yann Martel may be encouraged this week to pursue a life in writing. More than 230 fourth and fifth graders from Red Deer Public Schools will spend Saturday from 9:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Oriole Park Elementary, exploring the magic of writing. Students will be offered three interactive sessions, presented by 10 Alberta authors and illustrators, including Marty Chan, Sigmund Brouwer, Georgia Graham, Al Redel and Simon Rose. The 23rd Annual Young Writers’ Conference is presented by the Red Deer Public School Division and is meant to promote literacy, reading and writing in elementary students. For more information, visit rdpsd.ab.ca or call vice-principal Purnima Lindsay of Oriole Park Elementary at 403-347-3731.

A free public document shredding event is set for Saturday, says Christine Waldo, manager of member services at the Alberta Motor Association. The AMA has joined partners with the RCMP to host the event at the Southpointe Common mall at No. 141 2004 Gaetz Ave. The event is an attempt to alert people about the growing crime of identify theft. The police and AMA hope to point out that personal documents such as financial statements, bills and receipts can be used to commit fraud. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s open to private citizens to dispose of no more than six boxes of material. Businesses are not included.
